THE READER opens in post-war Germany when youngster Michael Berg turns out to be sick and is homed by Hanna, a more abnormal twice his age. Michael recuperates from red fever and searches out Hanna to express gratitude toward her. The two are rapidly drawn into an energetic yet hidden issue.
