Sita, a middle-class girl, lives a simple life with her retired school-teacher father, Ramdas. One unfortunate day, she faces molestation by Prakash and slaps him in self-defense. Days later, Ghanshyamdas, a wealthy former student of Ramdas, approaches him to propose Sita’s marriage to his son. The wedding takes place, and Sita moves into Prakash’s house, where she encounters his mother Shanti, married sister Shobha (whose husband is Police Inspector Sudhir), cousin Amar, and Shanti’s brother Rakesh (who had also tried to molest Sita). Shanti and Shobha, disappointed that Prakash didn’t marry the wealthy and beautiful Sonia, start physically and verbally abusing Sita. Prakash makes it clear that he married her only to get back at her for the slap. The situation worsens after Ghanshyamdas’ demise, and the family, except Amar, attempts to burn Sita alive.
