Nickel Boys (2024) Film Short Story :

A heartbreaking account of how young people of color were mistreated and abused at a reform school. It is exclusively told from the subjective POV of the main character and a fellow intern he befriends at the school.  Despite my appreciation for the goal’s ambition, it unfortunately and paradoxically distances me from the protagonist. With this method, some of the first scenes felt a little contrived and forced, and the dialog never flowed naturally. It was also a challenge to watch this without subtitles at the Stockholm Film Festival because it was hard to hear the dialogue in some scenes. You could grasp the events, but details was lost on me.  Despite these objections regarding the stylistic choice, the story was still somewhat gripping but overall, it could have been even more so using a more traditional narrative.
