The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999) Film Short Story :
1429. While the war between France and England (the Hundred Years War) appeared settled in 1420, in England’s favour, the death of King Henry V of England reignites it. England occupies large areas of France and appears set to take the whole of it. Into this moment of crisis rides legendary Joan of Arc, a teenage girl who claims to be lead by divine visions.
Most of the characters, including Joan’s Captains, were real people. After the war and Joan’s death, Giles de Rais was a real person who retired to his lands. Many years later, he was arrested for the murder of more than 100 young boys, and executed. Some historians believe that his crimes were the basis for the French fairy tale “Bluebeard,” about a rich man who murders his wives and hides their bodies in his grand house.
The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999) Full Movie Review:
I watched The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc recently. Bhai, what a visual spectacle but strange movie! Luc Besson (who made The Fifth Element) directed this historical drama with Milla Jovovich as Joan of Arc. you can watch online on Youtube Here.
Milla plays Joan like complete crazy woman! She’s always screaming about visions from God and running into battles with wild eyes. Sometimes you wonder if she’s holy warrior or just mentally disturbed person.
Battle scenes are spectacular though – horses charging, arrows flying, blood everywhere. The cinematography makes medieval France look amazing with beautiful castles and countryside.
But problem is film never makes you understand or care about Joan herself. As Roger Ebert said, it’s like “gassy costume epic with nobody at center.” You see all these grand scenes but feel nothing.
Film tries to question whether Joan’s visions were real or just in her head, which is interesting angle, but execution is messy. Supporting cast includes Dustin Hoffman and John Malkovich who seem to be in completely different movie!
Most critics hated it (only 31% positive reviews), but some people enjoy its weird energy and beautiful visuals. If you like unusual historical films with great battle scenes, might be worth watching. Just don’t expect accurate history lesson!
