Hastar is a malevolent entity who can both curse and bestow gold coins upon mortals. The myth of Hastar goes that when the Goddess of Prosperity created the universe, she first gave birth to Hastar, followed by 16 crore gods and goddesses. Hastar, being her favorite, was extremely greedy. When offered a choice between owning all the gold or all the food in the universe, Hastar’s avarice led him to attempt taking both, resulting in a fierce battle with his siblings. The 16 crore gods and goddesses overpowered Hastar and tried to kill him, but the Goddess of Prosperity intervened, begging for her firstborn’s life. They agreed to spare Hastar on one condition – that he would never be mentioned in the Puranas nor worshiped by anyone.
